ALTERNATIVE PATH HOME

So upset is that little squirrel on the utility pole.
How quickly the shadow of the hill races down the slope to engulf us.
Such blessing to sit long enough to experience the cycles of the earth.
The squirrel seems to think the kitties and I have blocked its path back to the tree.
It could of course run along the fence, but it knows only that the sun is setting, The hour grows late, the temperature quickly drops, and the path it knows has strange and frightening creatures along it.
Now a waxing breeze adds further urgency to the situation.
Crises have a way of leading us to new paths to our destination. But the hoped-for destination should be firmly fixed, not subject to emergency or crisis. The little squirrel’s home remains in the tree overhead, and the crisis of my presence does not change that. The little squirrel just needs to keep its sights fixed on that goal, opening its eyes to new paths to reach it.
In our lives we best have our goal, our long term, eternal goal for our soul, firmly fixed in our hearts.
Our path to that goal will regularly change per the vicissitudes of circumstance and revelations welcomed and avoided. Belief will change, faith will change, loyalties and friends and memberships will change, and if they don’t the goal sought is of questionable worth. But somewhere under the career, titles, credos, dogmas, and rituals of daily life, all subject to adaptation and accommodation, the soul’s goal better remain fixed, lest the soul be lost without rudder or sail.
The description of the goal, the name of the goal, as well as the path to the goal can change and alter in response to the experiences and lessons of life. But Home is Home, and eternal is forever, so aim carefully, with ongoing course corrections.
The little squirrel is quiet and not to be seen. It's furry wisdom seems to have revealed an alternative path to its home.
